Connecting to Roots Program (C2RP)
Annual Appeal 2009
As the national representative organization of the people of Nepali origin living in Canada, NRN-Canada is committed to promoting welfare, rights and well-being of the members of the Nepali community in Canada. In fulfilling this mission, the organization collaborates with Nepali community associations and various other actors across Canada. Also, in collaboration with the Global Nepali Diaspora and several like-minded stakeholders, the organization intends to participate in promoting peace and prosperity in Nepal. This annual appeal is for all the members of the Nepali community in Canada to contribute towards fulfilling the noble mission.
The timing of the appeal fits well with the Nepali traditional festival of Tihar that is celebrated with great enthusiasm by people of all walk of life and traditions. During Tihar, Nepali households have long tradition of “giving” to the Deusi and Bhailo groups that visit their homes with colorful songs and dances. With the intent of connecting our young and future generations to their roots, the goals of the celebration and the appeal are:
- Celebration of Nepali cultural heritage and create awareness about the same, especially among the Nepali children and youth
- Fundraising for charitable purposes, with a modest target of $4,000.
The two charitable causes to be supported are:
- Eco- Model Village Development: $2,500 of the raised funds is planned to be contributed towards developing an eco model village in a conflict ravaged and cholera ridden area of Nepal. Such village will be selected and developed in collaboration with a Nepal based partner organization, and other like-minded actors will be invited to work together. Women, children and marginalized groups will be major beneficiaries.
- Youth Initiative: Support at least one youth member from the Nepali Community in Canada with a grant of $1,500 to implement her/his selected project in Nepal over a stipulated time-frame. A detailed selection process is already developed and being reviewed. The selected candidate will be encouraged and assisted to access additional funding from other sources.
We call upon each and every individual, families and organizations of the people of Nepali origin in Canada as well as friends of Nepal to celebrate Nepalese traditional festival of Deusi-Bhailo and to contribute to this common fund. This is an initiative on behalf of all people of Nepali origin in Canada and it will succeed only with the cooperation and collaboration of our community members- children, youth, women and men- from all walks of life. All contributions will be duly acknowledged and recognized, volunteer letters will be provided to students upon recommendation from local Coordinators of the program, and charitable tax receipts will be issued for donations of $50 and above.
Thank you for your support and cooperation. For further details, please contact members of the National Coordination Council of NRN-Canada in your area.
